Common Name: quetiapine

How does Seroquel work?

Quetiapine is used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. It works by affecting the actions of certain chemicals in the brain known as neurotransmitters. Your doctor may choose to use this medication for other conditions not listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor.

How should I use Seroquel?

Quetiapine is usually started with a fairly small dose in order to allow the body to get used to it. The doctor will then usually increase the dose until the most effective dose is reached. Different people will need different doses, and your doctor will prescribe the dose for you that best meets your needs. Quetiapine can be taken with or without food. If a dose of quetiapine is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on as usual with your next dose. It is important to take this medication regularly to ensure that you are getting the maximum benefit from the medication. Quetiapine should be stored at normal room temperature in a dry place (not in the bathroom).

What form(s) does Seroquel come in?

Quetiapine is available as a round peach-coloured 25 mg tablet, a round yellow 100 mg tablet, and a round white 200 mg tablet. Inactive ingredients include starch and lactose. This product does not contain gluten or yeast.

What should I NOT take with Seroquel?

Quetiapine should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients of the product.

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Seroquel?

Pregnancy: The safety of quetiapine use during pregnancy is not known. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant while taking this medication. Quetiapine should only be used during pregnancy if the doctor decides that the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks. Breast-feeding: It is not known whether quetiapine passes into breast milk. Breast-feeding is not recommended while taking quetiapine unless the doctor decides that the benefits of the medication outweigh the potential risks to the child.
