How does Hyzaar work?

This is a combination product that contains 2 medications (losartan and hydrochlorothiazide) used to lower high blood pressure. Losartan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II blockers and helps to lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic or "water pill" that helps control blood pressure by getting rid of excess salt and water. This medication is most often prescribed when other drugs have been found not to be effective or to have side effects and when a person is stabilized on losartan and hydrochlorothiazide given individually. Your doctor may choose to use this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you are unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor.

How should I use Hyzaar?

Once the dose of each component (losartan and hydrochlorothizide) has been determined, the combination tablets (Hyzaar®) can be started. The recommended dose ranges are: Hyzaar tablets (losartan 50 mg - hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg): 1 or 2 tablets once daily. The maximum dose is 2 Hyzaar tablets per day.
