Common Name: valsartan

How does Diovan work?

Valsartan belongs to a family of medicines known as angiotensin II receptor blockers. These medicines are used to lower high blood pressure and work by relaxing blood vessels. Angiotensin II is a chemical that the body releases to cause the constriction of blood vessels. Valsartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, resulting in the relaxation of the blood vessels. This relaxation causes the blood pressure to drop. The full effects of valsartan are usually seen within about 4 weeks. Your doctor may choose to use this medication for other conditions not listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor.

How should I use Diovan?

The recommended adult dose of valsartan is 80 mg once daily taken with or without food (but taken in the same manner each day). Reductions in blood pressure are often seen within 2 weeks, and the full effects on blood pressure are seen in about 4 weeks. Your doctor may recommend a dose increase of valsartan to 160 mg daily if your blood pressure remains too high. A diuretic (water pill) may also be added to help reduce the blood pressure. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that you take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses. Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture.

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Diovan?

Kidney problems: Valsartan may affect the function of the kidneys, especially in those who already have kidney problems. Make sure to tell your doctor if you have problems with your kidneys so that he or she can closely monitor your kidney function. Liver problems: The ability of the body to break down (eliminate) valsartan may be affected in people with below normal liver function. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have liver problems. Low blood pressure: Occasionally, a larger-than-expected decrease in blood pressure occurs after taking valsartan. In some cases, this happens after the first dose. It is more likely to occur if you take diuretics (water pills), have a reduced salt intake, are on dialysis, or are experiencing diarrhea or vomiting. Blood pressure should be monitored more often in these situations. Those with low blood pressure or those just starting this medication should move slowly from a reclining to an upright position to reduce the risk of dizziness. Pregnancy: Valsartan should not be taken by pregnant women as it can cause harm to an unborn child. If you discover you are pregnant while taking this medication, stop taking it and tell your doctor at once. Breast-feeding: It is not known if valsartan is excreted in breast milk. You and your doctor will need to decide whether you should stop taking the drug or stop nursing, based on the importance of the drug to your health. Children: The safety and effectiveness of valsartan for children is unknown.
