Common Name: perindopril

How does Coversyl work?

Perindopril belongs to the class of medications called ACE inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It helps to control blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. Perindopril may be used alone or in combination with other medications that reduce blood pressure, especially thiazide diuretics (water pills). Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Coversyl?

The recommended dose of perindopril ranges from 2 mg to 8 mg daily in one dose or two divided doses. For best results, the tablets should be taken on an empty stomach. Seniors and people with kidney disease may require smaller doses. Depending on needs, perindopril may be used alone or in combination with additional medications that reduce blood pressure. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that this medication be taken on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double-up on doses.

What form(s) does Coversyl come in?

Coversyl® is available in strengths of 2 mg and 4 mg. 2 mg: Each white, round tablet contains perindopril 2 mg. 4 mg: Each white, rod-shaped, scored tablet contains perindopril 4 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: hydrophobic colloidal silica, lactose, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.

What should I NOT take with Coversyl?

Perindopril should not be taken by anyone allergic to the medication or any of its ingredients, or by anyone who has had angioedema (a serious allergic reaction which causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell) after taking any other ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, enalapril, ramipril).

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Coversyl?

Angioedema: Angioedema (a serious allergic reaction that causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell) may occur with ACE inhibitors, including perindopril, although uncommonly. If you experience swelling of the face, tongue, or glottis, stop taking perindopril at once and seek immediate medical attention. People who have had angioedema caused by other substances may be at increased risk of angioedema while taking an ACE inhibitor such as perindopril. Fluid and electrolyte balance: Increases in blood levels of potassium occur for approximately 1.4% of people who take perindopril. This rarely causes problems, but your doctor should monitor your potassium levels. Kidneys: Changes in kidney function have been seen in certain people. The use of diuretics (water pills) may further increase the risk of kidney problems for those already at risk for this. Low blood pressure: Occasionally, blood pressure drops too low after perindopril is taken. This usually happens after the first or second dose or when the dose is increased. It is more likely to occur for those who take water pills, have a salt-restricted diet, are on dialysis, are suffering from diarrhea or vomiting, or have been sweating excessively and not taking in enough fluids. If low blood pressure causes you to faint or feel light-headed, contact a doctor. Medical conditions: Perindopril should be used cautiously by those with kidney disease or liver disease. Pregnancy: Perindopril should not be taken by pregnant women. If you discover you are pregnant, you should stop taking perindopril at once and talk to your doctor. Breast-feeding: It is not known whether perindopril passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of using this medication. Children: The safety and effectiveness of the use of perindopril by children have not been established. Its use by this age group is not recommended.
