How does Biaxin work?
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. It works by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria that may cause certain throat infections such as tonsillitis, sinus infections, lung infections such as pneumonia, and skin infections such as impetigo and cellulitis. It is also used in combination with other medications to kill H. Pylori, a bacteria known to cause ulcers in the digestive tract. Your doctor may choose to use a medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor. How should I use Biaxin?
Adults: The recommended adult dose of clarithromycin is 250 mg to 500 mg twice daily, taken with or without meals. The usual duration of treatment for most conditions is 7 to 14 days. Children: The recommended daily dose for children is 15 mg per each kilogram of weight (to a maximum of 1,000 mg per day). This dose should be divided in two and the two half-doses should be taken 12 hours apart, with or without meals. The usual duration of treatment for most conditions is 5 to 10 days. This medication may cause less stomach upset if taken with food. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to feel better. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule.
