How does Proloprim work?

Trimethoprim belongs to the class of medications called antibiotics. It is used for the treatment of certain types of infections caused by bacteria. It is most commonly used to treat bladder (urinary tract) infections. Trimethoprim works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection. Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Proloprim?

The recommended adult dose of trimethoprim is 100 mg twice daily (every 12 hours) or 200 mg once daily (every 24 hours) for a period of 10 days. Trimethoprim may be taken with or without meals. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to feel better. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

What form(s) does Proloprim come in?

Proloprim® is available in strengths of 100 mg and 200 mg. 100 mg: Each white, round tablet imprinted, with "PROLOPRIM 09A" on the same side as a score mark, contains trimethoprim 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: pregelatinized starch, lactose, magnesium stearate, and sodium starch glycolate. 200 mg: Each yellow, round tablet, imprinted with "PROLOPRIM R2C" on the same side as score mark, contains trimethoprim 200 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: D & C Yellow No. 10, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, and sodium starch glycolate.

What should I NOT take with Proloprim?

Trimethoprim should not be used by anyone who: is allergic to trimethoprim or any of the other ingredients of the medication has a blood condition known as megaloblastic anemia (caused by folate deficiency) is pregnant is breast-feeding

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Proloprim?

Blood disorders: The presence of sore throat, fever, pale skin, rash, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin) may be early signs of rare but serious blood disorders. Anyone who develops these symptoms after starting trimethoprim should contact their doctor. Folic acid levels: Trimethoprim should be taken with caution by anyone with a possible folic acid deficiency. Kidney and liver function: Trimethoprim should be taken with caution by anyone with reduced kidney or liver function. Skin rash: If the recommended dosage is doubled, skin rashes are more likely to occur. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Trimethoprim should not be taken by pregnant or breast-feeding women. Children: The safety of trimethoprim for infants younger than two months of age has not been established. The effectiveness of trimethoprim alone (i.e., not in combination with other antibiotics) has not been established for children younger than 12 years of age.
