Common Name: flurbiprofen eye drops

How does Ocufen work?

Flurbiprofen eye drops belong to a group of medications known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They are used to reduce inflammation in the eye after cataract removal and other types of eye surgery. They are also used to prevent narrowing of the pupil (the black part of the eye) during eye surgery, and to prevent a condition called cystoid macular edema (CME) after eye surgery. Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Ocufen?

When used to prevent narrowing of the pupil, 1 drop every half hour is given to the affected eye(s) beginning two to three hours before surgery, for a total of 4 to 6 drops. When used to reduce eye inflammation after eye surgery, 1 drop is given to the affected eye(s) every four hours for one to three weeks, depending on the type of surgery. The dose is then reduced as directed by your doctor. When used to prevent cystoid macular edema after eye surgery, 1 drop is given to the affected eye(s) four times daily for three months. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to instruct you in the proper technique for using eye drops. Before using the eye drops, wash your hands well. Do not allow anything to touch the tip of the dropper, as this could contaminate it. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that this medication be used on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, check with your health care professional. Do not double-up on doses.

What form(s) does Ocufen come in?

Each mL of sterile eye solution contains flurbiprofen sodium 0.03%. Nonmedicinal ingredients: citric acid, edetate disodium, hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH, polyvinyl alcohol, potassium chloride, purified water, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, and thimerosal (as preservative).
