Common Name: pentoxifylline

How does Trental work?

Pentoxifylline is used for the treatment of chronic circulation disorders of the extremities such as intermittent claudication (peripheral arterial disease). It helps to improve blood flow and leg pain associated with poor circulation. It may allow further distances to be walked before leg pain or cramps occurs. Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Trental?

The usual recommended adult starting dose of pentoxifylline is 400 mg twice daily after meals. The dose is adjusted by the doctor over time as needed to a maximum of 400 mg three times daily. The tablets must be swallowed whole. It may take up to two months to see the full beneficial effects of the medication. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that this medication be taken regularly and exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without first talking with your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
