How does Prinivil work?

Lisinopril belongs to a class of medications called ACE inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels and helping the heart to pump blood that carries oxygen to the different parts of the body more efficiently. It is also used immediately after a heart attack in order to reduce the risk of having another heart attack. Your doctor may choose to use a medication for conditions other than the ones listed here. How should I use Prinivil?

The recommended adult dose of lisinopril ranges from 2.5 mg to 40 mg daily, depending on the condition being treated. It is taken in one daily dose with or without food. People who take other medications that lower blood pressure (e.g., diuretics) or people who have kidney disease may need lower doses. It may take up to two weeks to see the full effects of the medication. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is important that this medication be taken regularly and exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

What form(s) does Prinivil come in?

Prinivil® is available in strengths of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. 2.5 mg: Each white, round, flat-faced, bevelled-edged, compressed tablet, with "MSD" on one side and "15" on the other side, contains lisinopril 2.5 mg. 5 mg: Each white, shield-shaped, scored, compressed tablet, with "19/19" on one side and "PRINIVIL" on the other, contains lisinopril 5 mg. 10 mg: Each yellow, shield-shaped, compressed tablet, with "106" on one side and "PRINIVIL" on the other, contains lisinopril 10 mg. 20 mg: Each peach-coloured, shield-shaped, compressed tablet, with "207" on one side and "PRINIVIL" on the other, contains lisinopril 20 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: For 2.5 mg and 5 mg tablets: calcium phosphate, cornstarch, magnesium stearate, and mannitol. For 10 mg and 20 mg tablets: calcium phosphate, cornstarch, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, and mannitol.

What should I NOT take with Prinivil?

This medication should not be taken by anyone who has: an allergy to lisinopril or any ingredients of this medication a history of angioedema (a serious allergic reaction which causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell) after taking any ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, ramipril)

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Prinivil?

Angioedema: Angioedema (a serious allergic reaction which causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell) may occur with the use of lisinopril. If you experience swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, stop taking lisinopril at once and get immediate medical attention. Other medications in the class of drugs known as ACE inhibitors should not be taken in the future. People who have had angioedema caused by other substances may be at increased risk of angioedema while receiving an ACE inhibitor. Fluid and electrolyte balance: Increases in blood levels of potassium may occur for some patients who receive lisinopril. This rarely causes problems, but potassium levels should be monitored by your doctor. Kidney function: Changes in kidney function have been seen for certain people (e.g., people with narrowed blood vessels in their kidneys, or those with severe congestive heart failure). The use of diuretics (water pills) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may further increase risk of kidney problems for people already at risk for this problem. Low blood pressure: Occasionally, blood pressure drops too low after taking lisinopril. This usually happens after the first or second dose or when the dose is increased. It is more likely to occur for those who take water pills, have a salt-restricted diet, are on dialysis, are suffering from diarrhea or vomiting, or have been sweating excessively and not drinking enough liquids. If low blood pressure causes you to faint or feel lightheaded, contact your doctor. Pregnancy: Pregnant women should not take lisinopril. If you discover you are pregnant, you should stop lisinopril at once and contact your doctor. Breast-feeding: It is not known whether lisinopril passes into breast milk. Caution should be used when lisinopril is taken by nursing mothers. Children: The safety and effectiveness of lisinopril for children have not been established. Its use by this age group is not recommended.
