How does Fluanxol work?

This medication is used in the treatment of nervous, mental, and emotional conditions, but it is primarily used to treat schizophrenia. Flupenthixol belongs to the family of medications known as thioxanthenes. It is thought to work by its effect on nerve pathways in certain areas of the brain. You may not feel the full benefit of this medication for several weeks. It is important that you keep taking the medication as prescribed by your doctor. How should I use Fluanxol?

The recommended starting dose of flupenthixol tablets is 1 mg three times a day. The doctor may increase this dose every two or three days depending on how you are doing. The usual maintenance dose is 3 mg to 6 mg daily taken in divided doses. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. Once you have reached a stable dose of flupenthixol tablets, the doctor may switch you to an injectable form of flupenthixol that stays in your system a long time and saves you the trouble of remembering to take your medication. Flupenthixol tablets may be taken with food or a full glass of water or milk to reduce stomach upset. If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as possible. If it is within two hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses. Store the product at room temperature and protect from light.

What form(s) does Fluanxol come in?

Fluanxol® Tablets are available in strengths of 0.5 mg and 3 mg. 0.5 mg: Each ochre-yellow, sugar-coated tablet contains flupenthixol 0.5 mg. 3 mg: Each ochre-yellow, sugar-coated tablet contains flupenthixol 3 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: potato starch, lactose, gelatin, and sucrose.

This medication should not be used by anyone with: an allergy to flupenthixol or related medications brain damage blood disorders liver damage serious heart disease, brain disease, or kidney disease There may be other conditions where the doctor may not want you to use this medication. Are there any other precautions or warnings for Fluanxol?

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Flupenthixol should not be used during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Children: Flupenthixol should not be used by children unless, in the opinion of the doctor, the benefits outweigh the risks.
