How does Alertec work?

Modafinil belongs to the group of medicines known as central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is used to help people with a condition called narcolepsy that causes daytime excessive sleepiness. It helps to prevent drowsiness and keep these people from falling asleep. It prevents sleepiness by stimulating certain parts of the brain. Your doctor may choose to use this medication for other conditions not listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, please ask your doctor.

How should I use Alertec?

The recommended adult dose of modafinil is between 200 mg and 400 mg daily. The total daily dose is usually divided between a morning and noon dose. Doses are usually started at 200 mg per day. It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Taking too much of this medicine can cause unpleasant side effects. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. If it is getting later in the day before you remember, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way you are using the medication without talking to your doctor. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

What form(s) does Alertec come in?

Modafinil is available as white tablets containing modafinil 100 mg each. Nonmedicinal ingredients include lactose, magnesium stearate, maize starch, polyvidone, sodium croscarmellose, and talc.

What should I NOT take with Alertec?

Modafinil should not be used by anyone who: is sensitive or allergic to modafinil or to any of the ingredients is in an agitated state has severe anxiety

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Alertec?

Severe liver disease: People with severe liver disease should use lower doses of modafinil because of an increased risk of side effects and accumulation of the drug. Occupational hazards: Because of possible over-stimulation and overconfidence, modafinil may alter the ability to perform hazardous activities. Normal fatigue states: Modafinil should not be used to treat normal fatigue states (fatigue due to lack of sleep rather than narcolepsy), as it can lead to overconfidence in abilities without actually increasing performance. This could make it more dangerous to perform hazardous activities. Severe mental illness: Modafinil may cause mental illness to return. People who have or have had sever mental illness should be cautious while taking modafinil. Heart disease: It is not known how modafinil will affect heart disease. There is some evidence that it may causes heart palpitations and chest pain. People with heart disease should be cautious about taking this medication. Kidney disease: There is little information about the safety of modafinil for people with kidney disease. People with this condition should be cautious about taking this medication. Seizure disorder: People with this condition should be cautious while taking modafinil. Pregnancy: Modafinil has not been adequately studied with pregnant women, so its use is not recommended during pregnancy. Breast-feeding: It is not known whether modafinil passes into breast milk. It is not recommended for use during breast-feeding. Children: The risks and benefits of modafinil have not been established for children. Seniors: Seniors may be more sensitive to the effects of modafinil. They should use lower starting doses.
