Common Name: spironolactone
How does Aldactone work?
Spironolactone belongs to the class of medications known as diuretics (water pills). It is used for the treatment of edema (fluid retention) that occurs with congestive heart failure and disorders of the liver and kidney. It is also used for the treatment of high blood pressure. This medication works by making the body lose excess water and salt. It is known as a potassium-sparing diuretic because it does not cause potassium to be lost from the body. Spironolactone is sometimes used to treat hypokalemia (too little potassium in the body) when other methods are not appropriate. Your doctor may choose to use a medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor. How should I use Aldactone?
The recommended dose of spironolactone ranges from 25 mg to 400 mg daily depending on the condition being treated, in single or divided doses. For treatment of high blood pressure or congestive heart failure, this medication is usually used in combination with other medications. Since this medication increases urine output, it is better to take it early in the day (with breakfast if you are taking a once-daily dose). Spironolactone may be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take the medication with food. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. I t is very important that this medication be taken on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double-up on doses. What form(s) does Aldactone come in?
